Maggie Cornejo, a Redwood City Planning Commissioner and passionate advocate for youth empowerment, was recently appointed as the executive director of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL). With a personal connection to the program and a career dedicated to community building, Cornejo brings a visionary approach to her new role, focusing on creating meaningful opportunities for young people across the county.
Cornejo, who grew up in North Fair Oaks, credits SAL programs with positively shaping her upbringing. Now, she is determined to pay it forward by enhancing the impact of the organization. “I’m honored to serve as SAL’s next executive director, as my entire career I have been driven by my passion to create opportunities for youth,” she said. “I’m excited to hit the ground running in our pursuit to change lives.”
Under Cornejo’s leadership, SAL will continue its mission of strengthening connections between law enforcement and youth while expanding its reach to underserved communities. Founded in 1997 by the late Supervisor and Sheriff Don Horsley, SAL has touched the lives of nearly 80,000 young people through programs that include tutoring, health and wellness initiatives, leadership development, and recreational activities like sports leagues and dance.
Cornejo’s extensive background includes roles such as government and community relations director for the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula and legislative aide for former Supervisor Warren Slocum. Her work on projects like the Middlefield Road Improvement Project and community-driven initiatives reflects her deep commitment to creating opportunities that foster resilience and success.
With Cornejo at the helm, the Sheriff’s Activities League is poised for a new era of innovation and growth, ensuring that local youth continue to thrive in a supportive and inspiring environment.
