“Manifest plainness, embrace simplicity.
Put others first, desire little.” – Tao Te Ching

Spring is the perfect time to scale down. Minimizing and becoming more conscious of how we use our time and things creates more space and greater peace of mind. Even our smallest actions to streamline can have very positive consequences, so here are a few ideas to help get you started on simplifying your life this spring:

Tackle Something Easy First

Start with your wardrobe. Put anything you no longer wear in a bag to donate. What you haven’t worn in two years might be the perfect addition to someone else’s closet. Place a note or a lotto scratcher in the pockets of donated items to give the recipient a little smile.

Clear Your Physical Space

Get rid of things you don’t use. Releasing possessions helps you let go of the past and any emotions associated with those items. Not only is this healthier for your organs as negative emotions can be detrimental to them, but it also allows you to live more fully in the present.

Repair or Replace Non-Functioning Items

A toaster that no longer toasts or a coffee pot that no longer brews serves no purpose and takes up space.

Clear Your Emotional Space

If you have relationships that aren’t healthy, you can feel emotionally cluttered. Bless and then release those people who detract from your happiness.

Review Your Schedule

Reduce unnecessary commitments. Give yourself permission to say no and only take on those commitments that enhance your life and fill your heart.

Eliminate Digital Distractions

Remove notifications from your phone. Turn off or place your phone in another room during meals and family time. Turn off the TV, use the time to learn a new craft or hobby, or send a handwritten note to someone dear to you.

Once you have cleared some clutter and simplified your life, you will have space to add some positive daily routines.

Include More Mindful Moments In Your Day

Keep a journal, recite affirmations or meditate to help you focus on and appreciate the present moment.

Practice Qigong

Considered a moving meditation, Qigong can help you add wellness, balance and vitality to your life.

Seek Out Periods of Silence Each Day

Use the silence as a time to renew. Include some deep breathing. Count your breaths as you inhale and exhale to make you more mindful of your deep, relaxed breathing.

Spend Some Time In Nature

Go for a walk outside or sit in your garden. Absorb the energy and the beauty of the natural world.

Appreciate Your Blessings

Gratitude is associated with greater happiness. Create a daily gratitude practice. It will give you a sense of well-being that you can carry with you throughout the day.
